Why the Latest DJI and Autel Restrictions Matter to Independent Drone Videographers
As an FAA Part 107–certified drone pilot working in aerial video, FPV drone work, and real estate media, I rely on accessible, reliable drone technology to create professional visual content. The latest U.S. restrictions on DJI, Autel, and other foreign-made drones could affect small independent operators by limiting future access to affordable, high-quality drones and accessories.
DJI is now pushing back, pointing to an independent cybersecurity review that reportedly found no evidence of unauthorized data transmission, hidden backdoors, unauthorized remote access, or unexplained radio-frequency emissions in tested DJI products. While national security is important, small drone creators also need clear, evidence-based rules that do not unintentionally damage small businesses and independent media work.
